News update (17th May 2014)

Welcome to Luxury Stranger dot net...

NEW - Success at the Bowie Convention and more...

Luxury Stranger played a powerful and emotional set at the Official UK Bowie Convention on Saturday, 10th May 2014. As part of their set, LS were asked to play several David Bowie related tracks in their own style.

The band played Bowie's Ashes to Ashes and Simon York played a solo acoustic version of Jacques Brel's My Death (La Mort) - a song Bowie famously played at the classic Apollo show where he killed off Ziggy Stardust and ended the Spiders from Mars.

Luxury Stranger also played a version of Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington's Wild is the Wind, a song originally recorded by Johnny Mathis but covered by David Bowie for the Station to Station album. Other famous artists to have also covered this track include Nina Simone, Clan of Xymox, Billy Mackenzie and Bat for Lashes. Here's Luxury Stranger's version...

More news - as many of you will know, Luxury Stranger open for Christian Death on Sunday 18th May at the Cluny in Newcastle. LS also open for ChameleonsVox once again, this time on 23rd May at the Duchess in York. (17th May)

Free Paco Now!

Simon York from the band has joined several people, including Yoko Ono and Martin L Gore of Depeche Mode, to sign the petition to free Paco Larrañaga.

Paco was just 19 when he was arrested for a double murder he cannot possibly have committed. Thirty-five witnesses placed him at college 350 miles away from the scene, yet this evidence was ignored. After 14 years in prison, people are saying thatenough is enough.

LS Fans - Help Simon York to Free Paco Now by signing the petition to free Paco!

Simon thanks you for your help and support.

For more information on Paco and the fight to free him, go to the Free Paco Now! website. (4th Feb)

New year, new songs, new shows, new label...

Luxury Stranger welcomed in 2014 playing a show in Leeds as headliners at the Library. More shows have since been confirmed - for a full list, please pop over to the gig page. More shows are still to be confirmed, so keep an eye out on the band's Facebook page and Twitter - please 'like' and 'foplloow' us if you don't already in those two places!

Simon from the band has been bashing out new material constantly for the past year or so - you can hear his home demos on the Luxury Stranger Soundcloud page - a lot of which has found its way into the live sets. Some of the material found its way on Simon's solo album, Nothing's Ever Quite What You Thought It Would Be. The band are rehearsing a lot of new stuff with a view to start recording this year in preperation for the release of Luxury Stranger's third album.

Over the Christmas period, Simon was in talks with a new label in Germany with a view to release his solo album worldwide. It's looking promising that new material from Luxury Stranger will also be released through this label. More news on that soon... (21st Jan)

Have a prosperous 2014...

Before the news, here is a message from the band to you:LS xmas band pic 2013

--------

"We hope you've settled after Christmas, but not too much - as the new year celebrations start soon... We would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support - without it, there would be no shows to play and therefore no CDs, badges or T-shirts etc to get made up to help spread the word. We hope in 2014 to play more shows in clusters - like mini-tours - and in the meantime we aim to record the third LS album. It's been tricky getting this one of the ground - there have been several versions featuring a wide variety of songs in different styles. Some of those songs have made into and remained in the live sets, some have fallen on the way side - maybe they'll feature as extra tracks or on future EPs/singles...

Many thanks for a great year and thank you for being the best fans in the world - see you soon!"

There's been some recent press through Penny Black music magazine - both for Luxury Stranger and Simon's solo work. Here are some links:

Review of Simon York live at Spanky Van Dykes (15th Nov 2013)
Review of Simon York's album - Nothing's Ever Quite What You Though It Would Be

The band recently played in Europe - three date mini-tour as a pre-Christmas treat. This was a great success and there are already plans/talks regarding LS returning in 2014 for longer trips and possibly more frequently... watch this space or keep tabs on the band via the Luxury Stranger Facebook page or via the band's Twitter feed. If you head over to the band's Facebook page, you'll find a few photos taken during LS' shows... the band also did a video interview with a German music magazine - as soon as that gets posted, the link will be on here.

You can also hear what Luxury Stranger are working on at the Luxury Stranger Soundcloud page where home demos by Simon are put up to give a taster of how the next album (or albums) could shape up. As mentioned earlier, a lot of these songs are now in the live sets and are being well received.

In early December, Simon, Tim and Tim headed down to High Wycombe's Bucks University to do a live video session. "It was like a video version of a John Peel session" said Simon, "it was a good laugh - something different. The team we worked with were great and really got into what we were doing. Hopefully we'll organise a Uni tour in 2014 - if we do then Bucks Uni will definitely be on the list". The band played several tracks which were filmed in an industry standard video studio. The results of this are being processed and more news on that will be revealed soon.

In 2014, the band will be one of several Nottingham bands, acts, groups and artistes who will feature on the Proud to save Nottinghamshire Pride CD. The CD is being produced to help raise funds to make sure there is a continued Pride festival in Nottingham... More news to come!tshirt_scratchy stranger

The band now have T-shirts featuring the scratchy logo as featured on this website and at the front of Tim's drum kit (see right). These were first on sale during LS' European mini-tour... they will be available at LS' first show of 2014 at the Library in Leeds on 4th January. There is an aim to get links in the website shop so that you can purchase them there.

This year saw Simon release his solo album Nothing's Ever Quite What You Thought It Would Be. This isn't the first solo work he has produced but it is the first album under his name that Simon has released. At first it came out on CD when Simon played his solo show at Spanky Van Dykes, Nottingham. Sales were good thanks to his performance on the night of both solo tracks and Luxury Stranger songs (both new and old and even one that the band haven't even heard yet). Copies were even requested from the LS merch stall when the band went to Europe. There are plans to release this album world-wide via a label - news on that as and when we get confirmation from the label. Until then, you can keep tabs on Simon's solo work via his solo Soundcloud page and his solo Facebook page.

All that leaves now is to wish you all a very happy new year. See you soon and please keep spreading the word and continue
to be the best fans in the world. Thank you. LS. (28th Dec)

Alternative track available on Soundcloud...Simon York

To help prepare people for his up and coming solo shows, Luxury Stranger's main man Simon York has recorded a new version of his song 'When The Lady Takes The Blame'. This track is available to listen to for a strictly limited time on the Luxury Stranger and Simon York Soundcloud pages. The original home demo of this song can also be heard on the LS Soundcloud page.

Simon wrote this song as part of the massive collection of songs he's put together towards the next Luxury Stranger album. Simon said - "I wrote loads of songs and instrumentals starting from April 2012, when I came out of a creative black hole and from all those tracks, the first version of the third LS album came to be. But from that I think we're only keeping 'Wash' - as it fits in with the atmosphere/darkness of LS. I've since completed another 40 odd songs which fit what I've always felt IS the Luxury Stranger sound... on top of that I've also written material for three solo albums and an instrumental solo EP. The plan is - well, my plan - to get as much stuff out. This is what I do now."

Simon has two solo shows planned for November (2nd November supporting Miles Hunt at DV8 Festival @ the Coliseum in Whitby and 15th November supporting the March Violets at Spanky Van Dyke's in Nottingham) with plans to draw as many solo shows in as possible in between Luxury Stranger shows - "It's what I want to do: write, record, perform, do film/art work for the shows/merch - get my songs and ideas out there... and that's it. So I'm going to do as much within the time I have - THAT'S my priority".

To keep tabs on his other projects, go to Simon York's Facebook page and click 'like'. Also, don't forget to click 'like' on the Luxury Stranger Facebook page for all up-to-date information - and remember to check your settings to make sure you'll receive notifications (if you're unsure how to do this check out this page on the Engaging Communications website).(27th Sept)

One such review features in Bizarre Magazine (September 2013 - issue 205) and on page 34, readers will see Luxury Stranger's own Simon York as he "belts out a blinder" at one of the two shows the band played at the Convention! (see pic right).

LS at DV8!midge tweet

Luxury Stranger played as main support to Midge Ure at this year's DV8 festival on 13th July.

The band played a high energy show (as per usual) following Cold in Berlin and received a great response from the audience, other bands from the bill who had stuck around to catch LS and Midge, and well... Simon York was woken up this morning by a text from a friend telling him of a tweet by Midge Ure (see pic right). Looks like LS did what they do best - impress!

LS played three brand new tracks - Lose The Pain, A Triumph Of The Heart and When The Lady Takes The Blame - all of which were very well received by new and older fans alike.

Below are a couple of shots from LS' set by photographer Neil Chapman, who works under the guise of Unholy Racket. LS return to York on Wednesday, 17th July for what sounds like a great 'pub gig' at the Fulford Arms... the band are looking forward to this particular intimate bash through some of their tracks. (14th July)

Face EP - OUT NOW!

Luxury Stranger have released the highly anticipated Face EP.

The EP was released world-wide through AFmusic in Germany digitally on 7th June, the release date for the CD format is to be confirmed - although, unofficial sources hint at the date being sometime in July.

The Face EP consists of five tracks:
1. Face

2. Feelings

3. She Takes My Soul And Wipes It Clean

4. Grounded (a new recording of the song which originally featured on the Desolation album - this is the first time the song has been recorded in the studio by a full band)

5. Nothing Holy - TB Remix (a 'club' style remix of Luxury Stranger hit single Nothing Holy... and the remix was done by LS bassist Tim Bond).

These recordings are only available on this EP - none of these tracks will feature on a Luxury Stranger album.

Simon York said: "This EP was originally intended to sit as a book end showing the line-up which at the time of recording was still new. Due to various things happening such as remastering, LS gigs and other commitments this EP was delayed. There will be a vast difference between the performances on this work and what is recorded for the next LS album".

You can buy the EP now from iTunes, Amazon and many more - see the AFmusic site for more information.(8th June)

LS would like to pass on their thanks to everyone at the convention - especially the staff, organisers and those who saw LS for the first time and came over for chat after the show...(4th June)

Spear of Destiny and Luxury Stranger... "an amazing night"!

Luxury Stranger supported Kirk Brandon's Spear of Destiny at Fibbers, York on Wednesday 22nd May.

The show was a great success and the venue owner/booker was reported to say that Luxury Stranger did themselves and the show proud.

LS first supported SOD in 2012 at Fibbers and it would seem LS made the right impression back then, both with the SoD fans and SoD bandmembers and crew. Simon York said: "When we got the support the first time, I was over the moon as some of my close friends have made comparisons between LS and SoD as well as Theatre of Hate (another of Kirk Brandon's band). To get the support again - well, you kind of get the feeling someone else is seeing the similarities and thinking 'that works, let's do it!'. The response from the audience was great, and having people who have never seen us before come up saying 'consider me from now on a loyal fan' - well, that's what it's all about, isn't it? It was an amazing night!" (23rd May)

Solo releases from Simon York

Luxury Stranger founder member and frontman Simon York announced last month that he will releasing some solo material. In early 2012, Simon released his first EP under his own name which was titled '1'. This consisted of several songs in various styles. Then in September 2012, Simon released the instrumental EP titled Other Voices: a soundtrack for a British animated film.

During March, Simon wrote and recorded 18 songs and pieces of music which he has tailored down to 12 for an album which will be called Sonics On Solace. So far, positive feedback has come from peoplle who have heard elements of the album. The album is now finished and Simon has started to go through each composition with a fine-tooth comb to iron out any parts he is unhappy with before mixing, mastering and releasing the album. Simon has also started work on a second solo album, titled Nothing's Ever Quite What You Thought It Would Be, in fact this album already consists of 11 tracks! Despite the Other Voices EP being completely instrumental, Simon has assured us that the albums will mainly feature songs with vocals with the odd instrumental in it to help break up the album and/or set the mood for the next song.

Simon hopes to drum up as much support for this project as possible via the usual outlets and press over the next year or so and has hinted that his wishes to support the album with a short tour in 2014 - although this will depend on him pulling together the right 'live band set-up'.

For all info on Simon's solo work, please go to his Facebook page, his Reverbnation page, or his Soundcloud page. (24th March)
