First full line-up show since Sept 2015 – a massive sound and a massive success... [31 May 2017]

Hi friends – hope you're all safe and well out there...

We finally did it – well, one of the things on the tick list of 'to dos' over the next few years. We played our headline show at the Carpe Noctum event at the Lending Room in Leeds which was the first show played with a full line-up since 2015 AND it was Harry Hallam's debut show on drums. And he played a stormer!

Bassist Martin Valentine made his debut in May at the Liverpool Tattoo Convention show after swiftly taking the position in the band – just a few rehearsals and he'd got it nailed... double rock 'n' roll!

The Leeds show was well populated, a fine mix of audience members wearing their 'genre tribe colours' on their sleeve but all together, there were LS fans – or LS fans in the making. A fine reflection of what Luxury Stranger offers and can reach out to – almost any musical 'pigeon hole' can appreciate and get into LS.

We played the following set:

Light Comes (intro)

Another Intoxicated Release

Dismissal

Nothing Holy

Wash

A Triumph Of The Heart (see the live video from the night on our videos page)

Where You've Gone

When The Lady Takes The Blame

Ripple

The Real Is Done

Side Of The Road

Diver

A massive thank you to Howard of Carpe Noctum for his ongoing support of Luxury Stranger and also to everyone who attended the show. Our next show as part of our 'getting our feet back into it' tour will be on 15th July at the Chameleon in Nottingham – and support will be coming from our very special guests Deathtrippers (who opened for us in Leeds), who are a fantastic band to see live... imagine the Jesus and Mary Chain with elements of the Soft Moon BUT completely fresh sounding. Come along and see/hear for yourself!

As promised, we've started our plans for the future. We've already confirmed three shows as key points to work around for 2018. We're also in talks with one of our old bookers in Europe who is more than happy to help us with a key point to work around on the mainland. Much more work going on behind the scenes and ALL positive stuff...

We've released our new T-shirts! And, they were flying out to audience members at the Leeds show – as did copies of the new album, Darkness Falls Upon The Light. We're doing a reorder of some of the T-Shirts to make sure we can keep on top of orders and when we add the T-shirts to the store page. You can also buy the CD version of the new album from our store page, as well as from our Bandcamp page, from Rough Trade (Nottingham), from Norman Records, and from Probe Records (Liverpool). We are getting closer to our target to fund the vinyl release, which will help us get the album into more record shops and out to even more music listeners – watch this space!

If you want us to play in your city / town / village, then please let us know – we want to reach everyone with LS' music and we want to make it easier for people to hear our music live. If you know of a good venue which is suitable for our needs then please email info@luxurystranger.net or sixminerva@yahoo.co.uk.

First reviews of Darkness Falls Upon The Light... [16 May 2017]

Hi friends – hope you're well...

Things are kicking into action now... again! Last weekend we played the Official UK David Bowie Convention and it was an amazing time as always. We had a hell of a lot of fun playing and also post-show chatting with people, signing copies of the new album and also watching Spizz Energi and Aladdin Sane. Many thanks to everyone who watched/listened to our set - much appreciated response - and also many thanks to the organisers of the convention and the staff at the venue - lovely people with a lot of love for Bowie and LS too!

As per usual with this event, we played a set consisting of Luxury Stranger tracks and songs by David Bowie performed in our own style. The show was done using the drum backing tracks – you can see videos of the two Bowie tracks we played on our YouTube page.

The set was:

Red Money (Bowie track, taken from Lodger)

Dismissal

Nothing Holy

A Triumph Of The Heart

Where You've Gone

When The Lady Takes The Blame

Slow Burn (Bowie track, taken from Heathen)

The Real Is Done

Side Of The Road

Diver

After the show, Martin accepted my invitation to come into the band full-time, which is fantastic news! The sound is so much fuller and his big 'Clayton-esque' bass sound suits the band so well. Harry on drums is giving some brilliant interpretations of current and older LS material and it's really good to watch / listen to, and it's exciting thinking about what he will come up with when we start work on the next album... but I'm getting ahead of myself! Our next show will be on 3rd June at the Carpe Noctum event, and it will be the full three-piece band.

The third Luxury Stranger album, Darkness Falls Upon The Light, was released in April and we've had a couple of reviews come in – more are on their way. Here we have a promotional review from Norman Records, who are stocking the album, and also a review from author/writer Andrew Hawnt.

Norman Records review of Darkness Falls Upon The Light

Andrew Hawnt review of Darkness Falls Upon The Light

The album is available world-wide via this website's Store page, from iTunes, from Amazon, from the Luxury Stranger Bandcamp page, and at LS live shows. It's also available from Rough Trade in Nottingham, from Probe Records in Liverpool, and of course Norman Records. Please go in and ask at your favourite record store – if they do not currently stock it, we're more than happy to work with them and send over a few copies... get the store's 'buyer' to get in touch with us!

Please buy the album, don't download for free or sit listening to a stream of the album repeatedly – it hurts. Thanks!

More shows to organise, confirm and announce – including a special home show in Nottingham on 15th July with a very special guest support. We hope to get this new album into everyone's heads, ears and music collection!

Hi friends – how're you?

On Saturday (6 May) LS played the Liverpool Tattoo Convention – the second time the band has played there. The event is in it's 10th year... and it was a fantastic weekend.

We were on at 8.30pm, playing a 45/50 minute set just before the headliners... KISS! Well, Europe's biggest KISS tribute band. It was great fun! Many thanks to all the staff and organisers at the convention and of course to the brilliant sound engineer, Lee, for being amazing and helpful.

While in Liverpool, we managed to get the new album, Darkness Falls Upon The Light, into Probe Records. So, if you live that way please head over there and get your copy. We also recently managed to get stock in Norman Records, based in Leeds.

If you're planning on coming to see us play on 3 June at the Carpe Noctum event, make sure you get your copy beforehand! The new album is also available from the Nottingham Rough Trade store – and we're not stopping there...

The new Luxury Stranger album was released on 28 April and is available world-wide via this website's Store page, from iTunes, from Amazon, from the Luxury Stranger Bandcamp page, and at LS live shows.

Darkness Falls Upon The Light – new LS album OUT NOW... [28 April 2017]

Hi friends – apologies for being slightly quiet over here at LS.net, we've been busy preparing for album release and much more...

Yes, you'll probably have seen the teaser promo videos (head over to the Video page if you haven't caught them yet). This is a series of mini promos (there will be nine in total) featuring snippets of each track from the up-coming third album, Darkness Falls Upon The Light. The series will be followed by an extended promo video featuring all the tracks with various bits of footage.

The album can still be pre-ordered via the specific DFUTL Store page, and there are still a few copies left of the single version of When The Lady Takes The Blame. Remember: this version does not feature on the album! Lots more goodies will start filtering on to the main Store page over the coming months...

We aim to tour the new album (which is released on 28th April, by the way) – however, as we want to play as many shows as possible, we're booking and announcing shows (see the posters above and our Shows page for more details) as and when they are offered to us – as opposed to putting some off 'til later. See it as a continuation of Luxury Stranger's original 'Never Ending Tour'... It's going to be great being back out there playing for you the fans, meeting new fans and just having a fun time playing the songs both the band and the fans love. There are plans to return to playing in Europe too – keep your eyes out for news on that, and please, if any of you know of bookers and venues who could work with Luxury Stranger then get them to contact us using the details on our Contact page. It's massively important and appreciated how much our fans get involved in helping us to set up shows along the way.

Thank you so much to those of you who took the time to pre-order the CD version of the new album – this helped out big time in meeting our deadline at the pressing plant. We aim to get those pre-order albums posted out soon with a view to try our very best and have them in people's hands if not on then slightly before release date. But please be patient – there were a lot more pre-orders than we expected.

We're in the process of organising a very special Nottingham show... news on that very soon.

Catch up... [14 April 2017]

After all of that info, I'm proud to take this opportunity to announce that Luxury Stranger has its new drummer!

Harry Hallam came on board around January / February time and has been rehearsing with me pretty heavily, going through both material from the new album and older songs from Desolation and 'Commitment and Discipline' etc... He's really picked up the vibe of LS and has certainly put the work in. I'm looking forward to working with Harry as part of the band and seeing what his own influences and style bring to the sound of Luxury Stranger.

There is still an opening for a second guitarist / keyboard player – the sound is big already for 'just' a three-piece, but with that extra element, I'm convinced the live experience will be even bigger for people seeing us for the first time and long-time fans alike. The new album is packed with some of the finest work to come out of Luxury Stranger – already having been labelled as "a masterpiece" by Nottingham-based writer, broadcaster, promoter and critic Steve Oliver. I'm looking forward to taking the journey in the life of Luxury Stranger as we approach the chapter of Darkness Falls Upon The Light, travelling with great musicians, a fantastic management team, good people, supportive industry people and the best fans in the world!

We've had a new review of the recent single, When The Lady Takes The Blame...

Released in Sept 2016, this single has been dipping in and out of various radio playlists since and gives an idea of what fans – and general music listeners – can expect to hear on the album... despite this version not featuring on Darkness Falls Up[on The Light.

"It’s the perfect single, and an excellent taste of what is ahead. If you somehow haven’t heard LUXURY STRANGER by now, you will."

Countdown to album release begins... [25 February 2017]

Luxury Stranger have been invited to once again play at the UK's Official David Bowie Convention.

This time the event is taking place in Hull, hometown of Mick Ronson and Trevor Bolder – members of the Rats and Bowie's band, the Hype (which soon became known as the Spiders From Mars, upon which time Driffield-born Mick "Woody" Woodmansey had joined on drums). Hull is also 2017's City of Culture, so it's going to be a massive event!

This will be the fourth time Luxury Stranger has played the event (the fifth for Simon who played a solo show one year), and Simon and the band have always cherished performing at these conventions. Luxury Stranger has reached an audience it may not have done, by being involved with an event that celebrates – and continues to celebrate – one of the biggest influences on modern western popular music.

From people who listen to a particular artist, we've gained faithful fans who have recognised that our music is for anyone who can recognise the links to the music across genres that they were listening to growing up or found out in a particular period of their life.

True music fans...

LS will be playing on Saturday 13th May... so far, we've rehearsed about an hour's worth of LS and db songs which all sit well together, a bit like a story of sorts...

A celebration of one of our "Heroes"... [14 January 2017]

Firstly, happy New Year! Last year was a great one and we're looking forward to what 2017 will bring.

Last November, we presented the studio version of our soon to be released third album to a press and VIP audience at our favourite venue, the Chameleon in Nottingham. The response was more than we could hope for and behind the scenes we've had some great feedback – and people are looking forward to the release more than ever. And then came the Christmas and New Year break...

Today, we received the first piece of press feedback on the event. Mainly focussing on the reasons behind the event we set up, the piece then casually lets the reader know that "the album is a masterpiece..."

New year, new album... [14 January 2017]

Luxury Stranger held a special one-off playback event on Wednesday, 30th November, as part of the run-up to the release of the band's third album, Darkness Falls Upon The Light.

The event was held at the Chameleon in Nottingham and hosted members of the press, friends of the band, people involved in the making of the album, as well as long-time supporters of the band.

A very nervous but confident Simon York and Jake Hampson opened the night, giving an explanation of the event and a short insight into the process of recording the album and the mood at the time. The lights were dimmed and the album began with the sparse but powerful beat of Another Intoxicated Release.

The tracklisting was / is as follows:

  1. Another Intoxicated Release
  2. Dismissal
  3. Wash
  4. A Triumph Of The Heart
  5. When The Lady Takes The Blame
  6. The Real Is Done
  7. Side Of The Road
  8. Diver
  9. Darkness Falls Upon The Light

Applause ruptured between each track – something Simon and Jake didn't expect seeing as it was not a live show – and comments over drinks after the playback were very warm and positive. A very emotional Simon gave thanks to all involved in the making of the album and to everyone who has continued to support the band. Jake helped close the event giving a positive description of an exciting year so far – coming into the band as a fan and listening to the new album in a room full of people with the love for Luxury Stranger in common – and also looking forward to the future...

Reports of a write up of the album / event have come into LS HQ, we'll post here that when it's out! Until then, pictured are two of the lovely comments received via social media...

The album, Darkness Falls Upon The Light, will be released through Cold Insanity Music (Germany) and Earth-Two Records in April 2017. The single version of the album track When The Lady Takes The Blame is out now and available to download or on CD at our shop page.

Album playback event [11 December 2016]

On 30th November, we will be holding a special press and VIPs only playback event of the long-awaited third Luxury Stranger album, Darkness Falls Upon The Light.

We want to give the opportunity to press members who have continuously helped and supported the band, to listen to the album and jot down their thoughts and feelings on the soon to be released album, so they can perhaps give a brief 'preview' review and help to increase the buzz which is already flying around about the next major release from the band.

Much of the album was penned in 2012 and 2013 but various issues caused for a delay to the working of songs and a further incident almost halted recording. However, despite illness, Simon got up on the agreed and booked in first studio date and started work, in a collaborative capacity with studio legend Guy Elderfield, on what could potentially be seen as the best release (and songs) to come from Luxury Stranger since it's incept in 2006!

On the 30th November, Simon and full-time bassist (and long-time LS fan) Jake Hampson will be available to chat with the invited press and are also booked in with two music magazines to give the first in-depth interviews.

"After that, the stories that some people have asked to hear will most certainly be old and put away to rot and we can from then on just talk about and act on the future – that's what LS has always been about at the end of the day, moving on with an eye on the path and an eye on the goal... and it's been the band's strength too." (SY, 04/11/2016)

The first batch of invites went out last week, a second this week and a third is being prepped as we type...

The album, Darkness Falls Upon The Light, will be released through Cold Insanity Music (Germany) and Earth-Two Records in April 2017. The single version of the album track When The Lady Takes The Blame is out now and available to download or on CD at our shop page.

Album playback event [05 November 2016]

Novelist and magazine / comic book writer Andrew Hawnt was in the audience at Luxury Stranger's recent show in Nottingham – where the band launched the single version of When The Lady Takes The Blame and played a massive set made up of the soon to be released third album and classic tracks from the band's 10 year life.

Andrew reports that LS' "sound was full and immediate..." and that they "turned an intimate gig in a room over a greetings card shop into an engrossing moment of monochromatic performance art."

Live review from single launch show in Nottingham...
[30 October 2016]

Simon York from the band has been a long-time supporter of the Nottingham MySight charity (formally known as the Nottinghamshire Royal Society for the Blind, NRSB).

Just over a year ago, Simon was asked, by Hockley store manager Richard Rudkin, if Luxury Stranger would be up for playing a special show to help raise funds for the charity. Simon of course agreed.

That idea of a show eventually developed into an ongoing event called MySound which will be held in the Rough Trade shop's venue space... and LS headlined the first one on 28 October.

We'd been pushing the event like mad via social media and it paid off – £300 was raised for MySight, and Rough Trade were very happy to see the events continue at the venue.

Well done to all bands who played for pulling in people to support the night... and a MASSIVE well done to Richard on the success of his first MySound night – best of luck with the future events!

For more on MySight, go to www.mysightnotts.org.uk or MySight's Facebook page for the Hockley shop.

LS play MySight charity show [29 October 2016]

Jackie Nutty from Lyric Lounge Review Magazine very kindly felt the urge to give her thoughts after hearing the single version of When The Lady Takes The Blame: "Whilst staying true to their Alternative roots, this new material also has a frisson of invigoration about it that certainly whets the appetite for their eagerly anticipated forthcoming third album."

Single review [04 October 2016]

We played a single launch show at the Chameleon in Nottingham on Friday 30 September, as part of the Night Shift event. It was a fantastic night and rammed!

Our headline set, looked like this:

  1. Light Comes (instrumental)
  2. Paradise Untouched
  3. Dismissal
  4. Nothing Holy
  5. A Triumph Of The Heart
  6. Dreaming Our Lives Away
  7. Where You've Gone
  8. Dirt
  9. When The Lady Takes The Blame
  10. The Real Is Done
  11. Side Of The Road
  12. Diver

Many thanks to everyone – new faces and known – for being there for us on this very special and important night. The next time we'll be at the Chameleon will be a special press and VIPs only event we plan to hold in November. This event will be an opportunity for press to hear the up coming third LS album, Darkness Falls Upon The Light, and hopefully write a 'preview' review to help increase the buzz as we approach the album's release date.

We next time play Nottingham on 28th October – a special charity event for MySight (formally Nottinghamshire Royal Society for the Blind). The event is being held at Rough Trade in Hockley, and we'll have Joseph Knight and In Isolation as our support...

New single released [30 September 2016]

The new single from Luxury Stranger is out now. We know many of you have been waiting for the new album for a long time, and we appreciate your patience and continued support during that time. But now, it's all starting to be presented to you...

The new album, Darkness Falls Upon The Light, is Luxury Stranger's third album. It was written by Simon York around 2012 and 2013, with the 'last minute' added closing title track being written in 2014.

The first single, When The Lady Takes The Blame, features a version of the song which does not feature on the album.

You can purchase the single at live shows and from this website's store page. You can also pre-order the new album from there.

Steven Hurst from Glasswerk Magazine attended the Nambucca show on 24 September, and felt that "...the set delivered tonight showed that even with a member or two missing from the live set that they can still deliver the goods."
